Welcome to our host city Luleå, Sweden. The ACG is excited to host Mine Closure 2025 in the capital city of Norrbotten County.
Places to visit in Luleå

Luleå weather
In Luleå in September, a typical day ranges from a high of 12-15°C (56°F) to a low of 6°C (43°F), making it a colder but mild time of year. The sun shines an average of five hours per day, with little rainfall expected. The sea temperature is around 12°C (54°F). On the coldest nights, the temperature usually drops to around -1°C (29°F) and on the warmest days, the temperature usually reaches 19°C (66°F). It is advisable to pack for cold weather and layer your clothing as indoor temperatures are warmer.
Getting around in Luleå
Visitors can get around the city easily by using public transport, with the main form of public transportation being buses. LLT (Luleå Lokaltrafik) is Luleå’s public transport service with a well established map of the city. Click here to view the route map.
Right of public access: Swedish law allows use of the ‘right of public access’ known as the ‘freedom to roam’. You have the right to walk, cycle, ride, skin and camp on any land (except near dwellings, private gardens, or land under cultivation). It does, however, require that care and consideration is shown to wildlife, landowners, and other users. Do not disturb – do not destroy.
Near Luleå
Piteå is a small, coastal town with proximity to the archipelago and sea, rivers, forests and countryside. Only a 50 minute train trip from Luleå, Piteå is best explored on a 48 hour itinerary, kindly prepared for tourists to ensure the optimal visiting experience.
Kiruna is the northernmost city of Sweden, located a 4 hour train trip from Luleå. It is known for its iron ore industry, underground visitors centre, and church. The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are visible from Kiruna due to its location north of the Arctic Circle. The city of Kiruna is in the process of being relocated due to ground subsidence caused by iron ore mining.
Arriving from the Airport
There are several options to get from Luleå Airport to the city centre of Luleå which is known as Smedjegatan. Bus services to and from Luleå Airport are most commonly used.
Luleå Local Traffic
Bus 4 and bus 104 take you to and from the airport. The buses are located outside the airport terminal. Bus 4 takes you to the city centre and on towards Luleå University. Bus 104 takes you to the city centre and on towards Luleå bus station and Luleå train station.
